Happy Birthday MINI

original-mini

It was 50 years ago this week that the MINI – symbol of all that is British, mod, and cool – first rolled off the line. And from The Italian Job to, well, The Italian Job, the Mini has remained a tiny, economical and very stylish way to get from point A to point B. But how did the Mini become the Mini? Here’s a brief history of the car that proved that less truly is more.

Personal-Professional Split

Getting laid off about a month ago has been the impetus to finally make a personal and professional split between my digital identities, or at least my blogs.

I’ve decided to keep this space for personal writings and linkings, and I’ve started putting all of my professional oriented writing on my new blog at www.informationbricolage.com/blog.

From the author:

I COLLECT LOST LUGGAGE, PHOTOGRAPH IT, AND THEN TRY TO FIND THE OWNERS. IT’S A LITTLE ODD BUT NOT AS ODD AS STAMP COLLECTING, JUST A LITTLE HARDER TO FIND STORAGE SPACE. when A BAG GETS LOST THE AIRPORT OR AIRLINE WILL STORE IT FOR A WHILE AND TRY TO FIND THE OWNER. if they can’t identify the OWNER OF THE case THEY SEND IT TO BE AUCTIONED OFF WITH THE PROFIT GOING TO CHARITY. I GO TO THESE AUCTIONS AND BUY THE CASES SO I CAN PHOTOGRAPH THEM FOR MY WEIRD VOYEURISTIC PASSION. The reason for the web site? i would really like to try to find the people who own my suitcases, so if you HAVE ANY FRIENDS WHO HAVE LOST A CASE PLEASE GET THEM TO HAVE A LOOK.

Sorry about the silence

Sorry about the silence this week. Since getting laid off on Monday from MAYA Design, I haven’t been writing anything here. Hopefully that will change in the near future.

Birds on wires

Birds flocking around a series of power lines, in the evening. Sort of “musical chairs” for birds. By Wes Johnson:

The Ad Biz Under Glass

Grant McCracken has a quick post about the new TNT show Trust Me. As with Grant, I’ve only caught parts of the show, but I was also impressed with what I saw. Its a fresh perspective on the Ad biz.

The Eyeborg Project

Soon you may be able to see what filmmaker Rob Spence can’t. A micro-camera is to be installed in his prosthetic eye as part of the documentary eyeborg project: a work in progress. [ via Veer, RawFeed ]

I’ll definitely be following Rob Spence’s progress. I’ve always had a huge fascination with the cyborgization of the human body.

EYEBORG– The Two Week Trial from eyeborg on Vimeo.

Take a one eyed film maker, an unemployed engineer, and a vision for something that’s never been done before and you have yourself the EyeBorg Project. Rob Spence, Kosta Grammatis and a team of others are trying to make history by embedding a video camera and a transmitter in a prosthetic eye. That eye is going in Robs eye socket, and will record the world from a perspective that’s never been seen before.

This clip chronicles the first attempt at creating the eye– a two week hiatus of getting parts, assembling, and testing. Obviously we need a lab, and a bit more time. Can someone donate an oscilloscope?

Pallet Ottoman by BCK Design

I’d like to build one of these ottomans for our family room. I think it would be perfect. Original design by BCK Design.

Made from 3 recycled pallets, this ottoman/chair is a cross between post-consumerism green furniture and a tribute to ready-made. Showing that re-using without extended means of transformation can turn the right thing into a creative object. This is where design as an added value takes a stronger meaning.

“The Age of Stupid”

The Age of Stupid is the new movie from Director Franny Armstrong (McLibel) and producer John Battsek (One Day In September). Pete Postlethwaite stars as a man living alone in the devastated future world of 2055, looking at old footage from 2008 and asking: why didn’t we stop climate change when we had the chance? It will be released in UK cinemas on 20 March 2009, followed by other countries.

Looks interesting.

The Age of Stupid: final trailer, Feb 2009 HD from Age of Stupid on Vimeo.

The Age of Stupid is a 90-minute film about climate change, set in the future, which will have its world premiere in London on March 15th 2009 and then be released in UK cinemas on March 20th 2009, followed by other countries.

Oscar-nominated Pete Postlethwaite (In The Name of the Father, Brassed Off) stars as a man living alone in the devasted world of 2055, looking back at “archive” footage from 2007 and asking: why didn’t we stop climate change when we had the chance?

Wheel you pass me the salt?

Iris Zohar designs a salt and pepper shakers on wheels. My son would seriously love these, but they might be a bit dangerous and require a little more sweeping up after each meal. Fun.
